CURRENCY:

Do I need to exchange my US currency?

Exchange is not necessary, all vendors/stores accept US currency. Please be sure your bills do not have rips or writing on them.

Cash is preferred. Some places only take cash, but most take credit cards. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, a few places accept Amex and Discover. Most restaurants take credit cards. Frequently a credit card processing fee is added to the transaction. Some credit cards companies may add additional international transaction fees, check with your bank or credit card company for details about your card. It’s always a good idea to notify your credit card company or bank that you will be traveling. Credit Unions and Banks often block charges from international sources, unless notified. Frequently a minimum of $20/BZD is required to run a credit card.

Some vendors take only cash such as produce stands or small vendors, trinket stands, bakeries. A few stores offer cash discount such as the 10% cash discount at The Green House for purchases over a $100/BZD. You need to ask for this discount.

TRANSPORTATION:

Transportation ?

After arriving at Belize International Airport, you will need transportation to Ambergris Caye (it’s an island). Guest Services typically books the flights from BZE to SPR airports at no additional change to guests. Current prices are $157.75US Round Trip per person.

Guest Services will also arrange for ground transportation from San Pedro Airport to Indigo Belize Resort. This cost is $35 to $50/US dollars, for up to 6 guests per taxi. The taxi can also make a stop for you to pick up groceries for additional $5/US dollars per stop.

Once at your resort, you will need to rent a golf cart or use the water taxi. Indigo Guest Services will arrange for a Golf Cart Rental, cost varies by season but is typically $300 USD per week for a standard 4 passenger golf cart. Water taxi prices are $7 US dollars/one way/per person to town, they also have limited times for pickup. The Coastal Express water taxi station is just north of the middle of town.

RESTAURANTS:

Dinner typically starts at 6pm and it is advisable to have a reservation, which you can usually make online, or we can make for you. Lunch starts about 11 or 12 and goes until 2 or 3. Meals are difficult to get between lunch and dinner, appetizers are usually available during those hours.

Blue Water Grill (Tuesday’s and Thursday’s are sushi night, along with their regular menu)

Sunburn is the greatest risk, bring lots of sunscreen and reapply often, the sun is directly overhead and much stronger than most north American’s are accustomed to. Sun hats and rash guards can also be a great help.

Mosquitoes and bug bites: Wear bug spray, especially around foliage, after rain, and at sunrise and sunset. Typically the risk near the beach is low as long as the sea breeze is present.

Petty theft: Do not leave valuables or belongings unattended on the beach or in town. Indigo is 4.5 Miles from San Pedro in the safe, quiet, and Tranquil Mata Grande neighborhood. We have full time day employee’s and night security for added safety. Our island vibe is laid back, dress is casual, and flip-flops a must. It’s advisable to leave your valuables such as gold, diamonds, and jewels at your home, there’s little need for them here.

We are traveling with children, is there any concern?

Children can do just about everything there is to do in Belize, we have many families visit our country and partake in activities.

A note from the U.S. embassy, “U.S. citizens traveling with minor children may be asked by immigration officials to show U.S. birth certificates for each child. When children are not traveling with both parents, immigration officials often request signed documentation to establish the children are traveling with the permission of both parents. Such documentation may include notarized letters from the parent(s), custody or adoption papers, and death certificates in situations where one or both parents are deceased.”

If your are traveling with your children and both parents are not present U.S. immigration may request a notarized document giving permission for the child to travel. Please be sure to check with the U.S. embassy and have the required documents before arriving at your international airport in the U.S.

Are there restrictions for people with disabilities?

Generally speaking, Belize is not well equipped for persons that are disabled. However, if you are not wheel chair bound, you should be fine. On Ambergris many roads roughly paved and golf carts are the main mode of transportation. Most of the terrain is sand and beach. A few places have entry ramps, but mostly it’s steps.

Where do we buy food?

If you would like to order provisions for your vacation you can do so at www.matagrandegrocery.com Tammy and Justin do a fabulous job of making sure your condo is stocked before you arrive. Keep in mind most items cost more here than what you pay at home, so shopping at duty free and bringing dry goods such as peanut butter, cereal, and granola bars can be convenient and more economical. A welcome meal is also recommended. One of our cooks can prepare a delicious Belizean meal that will be ready in your condo at your arrival or later in the day. You may also schedule additional meals for your stay. Please advise us of any specialty dietary needs when making the reservation.

We have a number or grocery stores in town that you stop and shop at before coming north to Indigo, or, you can take your cart to town as most people do.
